Watering Trees in the Perth Summer
Perth summers separate the trees that thrive from the ones that quietly die back. The difference is usually how they're watered - and most people get it wrong by watering little and often. Here's the approach that actually works in our climate.
Deep and infrequent beats little and often
Light, frequent watering only wets the top of the soil, so roots stay shallow and the tree is helpless the moment you skip a day. The fix is deep watering: a long, slow soak that pushes moisture down where the real roots are, less often.
- Established trees - a deep soak every 1-2 weeks in peak summer is usually plenty.
- Young / newly planted trees - more frequent (every few days) until the roots establish, then taper off.
- Soak the root zone, not the trunk - water out at the drip line (under the edge of the canopy), where the feeder roots are.
A slow-running hose, a soaker line or a few buckets at the drip line does far more good than ten minutes of sprinkler.
Time it right
Water in the early morning so it soaks in before the heat, with evening as a backup. Watering at midday in a Perth February mostly feeds the air, not the tree.
Let mulch do half the work
This is where mulch earns its keep. A 75-100mm layer over the root zone slashes evaporation, keeps the roots cool and means the water you put on lasts. Watering without mulch in sandy Perth soil is pouring half of it away.
Watch for heat stress
Wilting, leaf scorch (brown crispy edges), early leaf drop and dieback in the canopy are all signs a tree is struggling. Ease off heavy pruning in summer too - removing canopy when a tree is already water-stressed only makes it worse.
